๐ง Differences between Antrochoanal Polyp and Ethmoidal Polyp
Feature | Antrochoanal Polyp | Ethmoidal Polyp |
---|---|---|
Origin | Maxillary sinus (antrum) | Ethmoidal air cells |
Laterality | Usually unilateral | Typically bilateral |
Number | Single polyp | Multiple polyps |
Age Group | More common in children and young adults | More common in adults |
Direction of Growth | Grows posteriorly toward choana & nasopharynx | Confined to nasal cavity, may reach nares |
Etiology | Infective | Allergic |
Shape & Size | Trilobate: antral, nasal, and choanal parts | Grape-like clusters |
Histology | Lacks eosinophils; edematous stroma | Shows eosinophilic infiltration |
Endoscopic Appearance | Single smooth pedunculated mass | Multiple glistening grape-like masses |
CT Scan Findings | Maxillary sinus opacification; widened ostium | Multiple soft-tissue densities in ethmoid region |
Treatment | Surgical excision (FESS or Caldwell-Luc) | Medical (steroids); Surgery if needed (FESS) |
Recurrence | Low (if completely excised) | High (if allergy not controlled) |
๐ง Mnemonic to Remember
