### What is Otology?

**Otology** is the branch of ENT that deals with the **structure, function, and diseases of the ear**. It includes the study of the:

- **External ear**
- **Middle ear**
- **Inner ear**
- **Vestibulocochlear nerve (CN VIII)**

A solid understanding of otology is essential for evaluating and managing conditions such as **Otitis externa**, **Otitis media**, **Hearing loss**, **Tinnitus**, **Vertigo**, **Cholesteatoma**, **Tympanic membrane perforations**, and **Otosclerosis**.

Otology is also critical for interpreting **audiological tests** like **pure tone audiometry**, **impedance audiometry**, and **BERA**, and for performing **microscopic ear surgeries**.
